Large-format tiles and epoxy grouting

With large-format tiles, planning is decisive. Tile size, the laying pattern and joint width all have to be considered. Every space is different and needs its own solution.

With large tiles even small errors show immediately, so careful planning up front saves problems later. A large tile brings out every unevenness in the substrate, which is why creating a flat, true base beforehand is essential. An uneven substrate can cause lippage at the tile edges and hollow spots, which spoil the result and can later lead to cracks or other damage.

Epoxy grout is, despite its price, an increasingly common choice — and for good reason. Compared with cement-based grout it resists staining far better and is more watertight. These properties come from the fact that the material has no pores.

Epoxy grout stands up well to chemicals, so it can be cleaned with practically any strong cleaning agent. That makes it particularly suitable for bathrooms and kitchen splashbacks, where stubborn dirt builds up. Cement-based grout does not stand up to the same treatment, and strong chemicals can cause it to crack.
